Description of Project
Please give a full description of the project in no more than 1000 words
a) In the case of a workshop/conference you should include the names of proposed participants and speakers, the structure and schedule of the event, and the planned numbers attending.
b) In the case of research, a detailed research schedule should be included.
c) If disbursements would be required on particular dates for the project to go ahead, please set out a clear timetable.
d) In all cases, please specify how the results of the project will be disseminated, and who its expected audience will be.
e) Could your project go forward without a grant from the Lipman-Miliband Trust? How would a Lipman-Miliband grant improve it?
f) And in all cases you are requested to provide an explanation of the contribution the project is expected to make in relation to existing knowledge and similar or related projects, and to the Trust’s core objectives, which are to support:

(i) study and research into socialist ideas and practice and other allied fields and the dissemination of the results thereof to the public; and

(ii) educational activities that raise public awareness and understanding of struggles and movements for peace, human rights and co-operation and a more equal, diverse, cooperative and democratic society.

The Southern Africa Fund is dedicated to supporting progressive social, economic and cultural projects that meet the Trust's core objectives (see above) and which originate from, or engage with, Southern Africa.

The Irene Bruegel Fund is dedicated to supporting projects that make a substantial contribution to combating inequalities, whether these be of class, gender, ethnicity, citizenship or any combination of these factors.

It is envisaged that applications for both the Irene Bruegel Fund and the Southern Africa Fund might require more substantial funding than the limit of £1,000 that applies to applications to the main Lipman-Miliband fund. However, because funds are still limited it would be highly unusual for us to fund a project requiring more than £5,000.

Exclusions: Please note that the Trust cannot subsidise living costs for undergraduate or post-graduate studies, although we do occasionally fund expenses (such as travel expenses) to facilitate specific research activities. Please also note that the Trust cannot fund projects designed to support or further the interests of a particular political party.

Please note that the Trust exists to fund specific projects. We do not have sufficient resources to finance running costs. In normal circumstances we do not fund wages or contribute to living expenses. We will, however, consider travel and work-related expenses that are essential to a project that advances our objectives.

For conferences or other events, please note that while we may be able to fund or contribute to accommodation costs, we do not normally pay for catering.

The final field (costs minus income) should give the shortfall in funding. If this amount is higher than the amount requested from the Lipman-Miliband Trust, please explain how you anticipate being able to find this additional funding in the description of the project.

It is both a sign of hope and a cause for dismay that the call on the Trust's funds has always outstripped its limited resources. Competition is often tough and we regret that not all worthwhile projects can be supported if others seem to merit priority.
